Lake County will benefit from another round of funding recently awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields grant program.

Lake County will benefit from another round of funding recently awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields grant program. The agency awarded a $600,000 grant to the South Central Oregon Economic Development District (SCOEDD) to be used for property assessment and cleanup in the county.

This is the second grant Lake County has been awarded by the EPA for work with potential Brownfields sites — properties which are environmentally hazardous or contaminated.

The first grant was issued for a three-year period which will conclude at the end of September. The $600,000 grant awarded Tuesday, May 11 will go into effect in October.

The second grant will expand efforts to properties that were not evaluated during the first grant period. The funding will pay for environmental site assessments, and development of cleanup and reuse plans.

Lakeview Community Partnership Exec. Dir. Ginger Casto is contracted by SCOEDD to help with the Brownfield grant activities.

Lakeview Lumber and the old Don’s Market site were both a focus of the first grant and will also be involved in the second round of Brownfields work.

Details on specific projects that will be funded by the new grant are limited at this time.
